I am at heart a writer and a student of effective communication. I experience joy in watching people and their business blossom as they so desire. And I am deeply curious: about others and what makes them tick. And I agree, I do listen well and wisely.
My journalistic and marketing beginnings are humble. Journaling avidly since the age of nine, in 1981 I was selected Editor of Arts and Letters of my high school Newspaper, The Lamplighter. A role I enjoyed for two years before graduating and packing up the bulk of my worldly belongings in a Pinto Wagon (given to me as a loan) and heading to college to pursue initially a degree in International Relations and ultimately a degree in Creative Writing. My initial intentions of becoming a diplomat simply took another route.
Fast forward 20 years and my professional adventure includes chapters on learning to typeset (what is coding that was the precursor to HTML!) feature writing for my college and then community newspapers, my first job in publishing, and freelancing as a book production and copyeditor.
Work in Printing and Prepress preceded my work in Advertising and Advertising preceded my work in Business Development and Sales. And all the while (and still) I monitor ever changing communication technologies, while the art of effective communication and building relationships remains fundamentally intact. And, while Kindles and reading online will gain in popularity, I hope we will always ALSO print books and periodicals.
In 2002 I professionally fell in love: with business development in the name of personal and professional development. And I also discovered formal coaching. And I brought along with me my practical and direct experience of publishing , marketing, advertising, and promotions for the benefit of my clients. And, I am a seasoned champion of bold, authentic and heart-centered self-promotion and self-expression.
Truthfully ask yourself: don’t we buy goods and services from people and their brands, as much as we trust “Them” (the person and their brand that is)? And behind every internet transaction and brand for that matter, don’t ever forget, there is a human being, somewhere.
In a nutshell, I believe:
Marketing is ANYTHING you can and choose to do to establish rapport and become known; efforts that over time result in win-win business relationships.
Marketing is ULTIMATELY about generating curiosity, creating a relationship and attracting those who want and need to find you and your offerings.
Authentic Communication saves time and is good for business and involves a great deal of listening.
High touch and high tech together are a dynamite duo when used wisely, tactically and this is important, consistently.
Please, I say YES, EMBRACE technology, but appreciate what works “the old fashioned way” as well. The best marketing practices I know of honor both. But where is it written you have to do it all yourself? Your dream team awaits you. Your ideal clients look forward to meeting you too.
